Mogadishu, 23 January 2023— The Somali Disability Empowerment Network (SODEN) offers condolences on the tragic death of the Director of the Department of Disability in the Benaadir regional administration. Ahmed Hassan Warsame was a visually impaired man who dedicated his life to serving the disabled people living in the Benaadir region.

Ahmed Hassan was among several people who died in a suicide bombing and shooting yesterday 22/01/2023 at the headquarters of the municipal government of the Banaadir region. Our deepest condolences to his wife, children, and all his relatives, as well as people with disabilities and the entire nation.

The killing of Ahmed Warsame was claimed by the terrorist group of Al Shabaab fighters who carried out a series of explosions and direct fighting at the Benaadir administrative complex, where Ahmed was performing his daily duties of serving people with disabilities.

“I am very sad to hear about the death of our colleague and friend Ahmed Hassan Warsame its shocking news that the terrorist group of Al-Shabaab has killed him and we pray for him in Rest of peace, Ahmed was my close friend and he used to be like my uncle really it’s very horrible news this morning, Al-Shabab want to fright us to stop the human rights movement we are doing but we will never stop and we will continue,” said Mohamed Farah head of Somali Disability Empowerment Network (SODEN)

The SODEN organization used to advocate for a long time that the people with disabilities in the Benaadir region should have a representative disabled person in the Benaadir region administration. Through this advocacy, in 2020 the Benadir regional administration established a disability department within the administration, and they announced Ahmed Warsame as a director of the disability department in the BRA.

Ahmed has done much for Somali disabled people, both during his tenure and before. He attended with SODEN lots of sessions that talked about the rights of people with disabilities and how to improve through unity and commitment among people with disabilities and their organizations.

                                                                                         REST IN PEACE, AHMED.
