Today, August 24th, 2022, the Somali Disability Empowerment Network (SODEN) is overjoyed to have begun a two-day training workshop with 20 participants from CCCM cluster partners and a delegation from the United Nations led by Kirsten Young, Chief, Human Rights and Protection Group (HRPG) Representative of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
Today was the first day, and we covered “Disability inclusion in IDP settings and the IASC framework.” This is a standardized tool that intends to identify how people with disabilities are excluded from aid and other essential services when it comes to displacement and emergency matters. Therefore, this workshop aimed to improve commitment and cooperation among CCCM cluster partners to ensure proper disability inclusion in every social aspect to reduce widespread discrimination against people with disabilities in every situation. Mr. Mohamed Abdi Malik, our facilitator, has deeply explained what disability inclusion in IDP settings and the IASC framework means to the disability community and how it is going to help them if it is being practiced by every one of us.
During today’s session, Mrs. Kirsten Young from UN Human Rights Office played a vital role in our presentation. She shared her experience of disability inclusion and how it is globally defined through CRDP principles. Our participants also shared how Somali people with disabilities are marginalized and excluded from the rest of society and how they would like to see them involved in daily activities and benefit from public and private services equally with non-disabled people.
Tomorrow, August 25th will be our final day to wrap up this workshop by finalizing many topics that are critical to our disability inclusion efforts in Somalia.
This program is supported by the CCCM cluster.
These two-day sessions are facilitated and implemented by the Somali Disability Empowerment Network (SODEN).
